Steps to making a budget

Managing money can be overwhelming. But if you don’t tell your money where to go, it will disappear before you know it. That’s why creating a monthly budget is an important step in mastering your money.

Regardless of your financial situation – or your stage in life – a monthly budget can help relieve stress and provide you with a sense of financial empowerment. The key is to remember that a budget isn’t about limiting yourself; it’s about building financial freedom.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a budget that works for you.

Step 1: Calculate Your Monthly Income

This includes:

  • Pay from a full-time or part-time job

  • Side hustles

  • Interest from an account at a financial institution

  • Any other income

Write down your total income so you know exactly how much you have to work with.

Step 2: List Your Expenses

Track everything you spend money on. This might include:

  • Needs: Rent, food, fuel and/or public transportation, insurance, phone bill, health care

  • Wants: Entertainment, dining, subscriptions, hobbies, travel

  • Savings and Giving: Emergency fund, future goals, charitable donations.

Step 3: Give Each Dollar a Task

As you craft your budget, give every dollar a purpose. Your total income minus your expenses should equal zero at the end of the month. If you earn $1,000, every dollar should have an assignment.

Step 4: Track Your Spending

Throughout the month, keep track of your spending. You can use a simple notebook, a budgeting app, or this budget worksheet. If you discover that you’re spending too much in one area, alter your budget accordingly.

Step 5: Adjust and Improve

Budgets aren’t one-size-fits-all. Your income and expenses will change, so review and adjust your budget every month. Always remember that if you’re spending more than you take in, you’ll end up relying on credit cards or loans, which will lead to debt.
